Designer Against All Odds

Such beautiful clothes, such unique and wonderful styles, textures and design. How does she do it? "It comes from God", Georgeva says, He steers my hand, my cutting. I never know what it is going to turn out to be until it's finished." No patterns, just creativity.

Georgeva's designs reflect the sum of her experiences. When Georgeva turned 18, her mother, the late Leona Sugar, gave her a wonderful surprise. Two famous actors, Amos and Andy arrived in their limousine for the auspicious occasion. Thus began Georgeva's adventures with the stars. She moved to Las Vegas where she met many, many big name stars. One afternoon in the late 50’s, Georgeva, also known as “Sugar”, received a phone call requesting her to design of a black shirt for a very popular young recording artist turned actor. After a brief pause, another voice emerged on the phone, this time it was that recording artist, he asked Sugar, “Are you as sweet as your name sounds?” It turns out that Georgeva had been commissioned to design the shirt for Elvis . . . Elvis Presley. That black shirt would be used in a movie Elvis was filming at the time.

At the tender age of 20, she was encouraged to become an entertainer herself. She became known for her famous "Don't try this at home!" Cuban Fire Dance. This led to her becoming the first Black dancer to appear at "The Last Frontier" on Vegas’ Strip. She began her designing career, designing her own costumes as well as for other performers.
Returning home to Richmond in the early 60's, Georgeva became the first Black woman to open her own clothing boutique on MacDonald Avenue. During this time she designed some of the clothes for the famous Ward Brothers when they were featured in scenes from "The Mack", a movie filmed locally. Following the movie, Georgeva and her husband, Mr. Georgeva, appeared in the VIP Magazine.

Moving once again to Las Vegas, Georgeva was invited to enter her designs in a national show at the Convention Center. The show, entitled "The Most Outstanding Creations" featured many famous designers. However, our Designing Diva won "The Most Outstanding Creation for 1975 and "Designer of the Year".

Georgeva enjoyed her successes in the entertainment world, but designing captured her heart and soul. She returned to Richmond, opening a boutique / nightclub for the local community, The demand for her designs increased, causing the need for a factory. Georgeva became the first Black woman to own a clothing factory in the Bay Area.

In 1989 Georgeva decided to stop designing so she could take care of her mother who was sick and would be bedridden for four years before she passed away. Georgeva was an only child. Not only was Leona her mother, but she was her best friend, her biggest fan and her everything. Now that she was gone, Georgeva knowing her mother would want her to carry on with her designs, has committed herself to continue putting on her unique fashion shows and helping others of all races, creeds and lifestyles. Fashion has become a part of living and breathing for Georgeva.
